Wha t ' s so sad. and disillusioning about encouraging school spirit? W ha t ' s wrong wi th admi t t ing you have any? I t ' s no t sophisticated. And we all w a n t to be sophisticated, don ' t we? Besides, if we weren' t blase and cynical then the enrolled masses and the News would have to find something else to talk and grumble about. Oh yes, it 's t rue, S ta te has a crackerbox gym, some very poor teachers, no campus, a quanti ty of chubby girls and effiminate boys and only four fraternit ies. If it is a t all possible, let 's be realistic for a moment . I t 's ha rd here, but try. Every campus has defects, so why use these excuses? Why use any excuse a t all for cynicism? And what 's so a c c e p t i b l e about enco' iraging pseudo-sophist ication and apathy? Did you know tha t one out of four s tudents a t S t a t e has a Regents Scholarship? T h a t s tudents are accepted part ly on the basis of a minimum I.Q., t h a t most of the facts tha t the adminis t ra t ion throws out about "cream of the crop", etc., is true, even if it is propaganda? If you're hones t you really don't have much of an excuse for being ashamed of S ta te when you come right down to it. So why be ashamed? Why by cynical? When the Class of '62 arrived we got the old t r ea tmen t of polite tolerance for enthusiasm, and we quickly learned t h a t to belong you
